Chesapeake Sails: A History of Yachting on the Bay by Richard Henderson, Many books document the workboats of the Chesapeake, but for decades Bay waters have been home to another kind of craft: sailboats designed and built strictly for the fun of racing or cruising. This book traces the popularity of sailing yachts in the Chesapeake Bay. Here, the term yacht does not suggest a large or luxurious vessel; rather, it describes a pleasure boat of any size. The author depicts these sailing yachts not only by the details of their design and construction, but also through the eyes and actions of their skippers and crews, effectively alternating factual history with the carefree and often humorous perspective of the sailors. Whether the Bay connection is the designer/builder or the home port, all types of sailboats are included. From early contests that involved working craft to today's regattas and one-design events, racing boats have provided an outlet for the competitive spirit of the crew. A variety of Bay cruising boats have carried their owners comfortably around the Bay and beyond. And the occasional boat has succeeded in both areas, as exemplified by the famous Finisterre, a cruising design that won the Newport-Bermuda race three times in a row. Among the Bay designers, Thomas C. Gillmer is well recognized for his association with the Pride of Baltimore, a replica of the historic Baltimore schooner, but he also designed the Seawind 30, said to be the first fiberglass boat to sail around the world. Other Bay boats described in the book include two versions of a Tancook whaler, the Owens Cutter, the Oxford 400, and boats by William C. Dickerson and Thomas E. Colvin.
Bay Area Wild: A Celebration of the Natural Heritage of the San Francisco Bay Area by Galen A. Rowell, The San Francisco Bay Area holds the most extensive system of wild greenbelts of any major metropolitan area in the world. More than 200 parks, preserves, and other protected areas can be found within forty miles of the city. Together, they exceed Yosemite National Park in size, biodiversity, and visitation. With stunning photography and thoughtful text, this book is the first to celebrate these separate national, state, regional, county, local, and private entities as a whole. Galen Rowell's books about wild places enjoy wide appeal because he reveals--in images and words--the essential nature of his subjects. The 172 photographs in this book--of rugged coasts, wild animals, redwood forests, wildflower meadows, oak woodlands, river deltas, bay wetlands, and mountain ranges--are every bit as evocative as images that lure travelers to far corners of the earth. Working with Rowell to create this stunning collection of images was award-winning photographer Michael Sewell, another Bay Area native. Sewell has spent years photographing Bay Area wildlife, using a combination of remote cameras triggered by infrared beams and Native American animal calls to record elusive creatures at close range in their natural habitat. Often working together in the field, Rowell and Sewell spent two years completing their coverage of Bay Area wildlands, wetlands, and waters. Spectacular photographs and Galen Rowell's rich descriptions of magnificent Bay Area landscapes, as well as interviews with the men and women who were instrumental in preserving them, combine to make "Bay Area Wild an unforgettable celebration of these unique national treasures.
